What Maria Pages talks about Sevilla
There are many ways of returning:
returning by plane, returning by train, returning by ship, returning on a house, sometime just imagined, or simply through desire's everlasting journey.
After my long trip experimenting, exploring
into the never ending possibilities of Flamenco,
when facing the challenge inherent to this new creation,
I felt the need to return to the beginning of my adventure:
....... to return to the roots,
to return to my childhood,
to return to ....
SEVILLA
The mother-creator of all my adventures,
on stage and beyond.
As to the means of transport,
my choice was the dream ....
And back home I realise that Seville is not just Seville,
not just the Giralda with its Giraldillo,
not just the fountains resounding with water
constructed with the art and skill of Seville¡äs craftsmen,
ancestors of my parents and their parents¡äparents.
Seville is not just the glistening rain in the alleyways
or the blinding sun reflecting off the ochre-tints walls,
nor is it just its royal gardens of the Alcazares
nor the moon shining on the oriental-style domes,
nor is it simply the streets made slippery with the wax
dripping from the Semana Santa processions,
nor the waterways, or paths through the olive trees
or this sweltering land which attracted poets, painters and musicians.
No. Seville is not merely all this.
It is much more. It is all the earth needs to touch the sky.
Seville is a Mystery.
Maria Pages
Now at the summit of her artistic development, the bailaora and choreographer Maria Pages from Seville has recently produced her best work. Inspired with a very personal idea of flamenco as a form of art with no boundaries, Maria Pages, endowed with her world famous "endless arms", has established for herself an outstanding place on the international dance scene.
"... Flamenco is an important example of how crossed boundaries between cultures, people and religions can create shared feelings ..."
Thanks to the use of the basic codes of flamenco and to a thorough investigation within and beyond its traditional boundaries, Maria Pages reaches beyond the culture gaps, thus proving her deep belief that cultural exchanges represent a major tool to encourage a better understanding between human beings.
Maria Pages' very personal idea of flamenco as a major form of art now enjoys international acknowledgement. Her work feeds on the roots of classic flamenco to reach out to all other forms of art, opening up new paths and a wider horizon to the future developments of this great Spanish art.
In 1995, Pages formed part of Riverdance, The Show, as guest artist and choreographer, performing in the most important theatres around the world such as Radio City Hall in New York, Auditorium in Chicago, Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles, Wang Center in Boston, Hummingbird Theatre in Toronto, Entertainment Centre in Sidney, The Point in Dublin, and Apollo Theatre in London.
