The Vienna Boys' Choir is one of the oldest boys' choirs existing in the world. For nearly five hundred years they have been a symbol of Austria. A founding document of Maximilian I in 1498 called the first dozen boys to the imperial court as members of the newly formed court music band. Thus he showed his great interest in contemporary musical developments in Burgundy and the Netherlands. Since then the Vienna Boys' Choir has been a fixed attraction in Austrian musical life.
Known for its exceedingly high vocal standard, the choir has worked with musicians including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Antonio Caldara, Antonio Salieri, Heinrich Isaac, Paul Hofhaimer, Heinrich Ignaz Biber, Johann Fux, Christoph Willibald Gluck, and Anton Bruckner.
Conductor Manolo Cagnin
Manolo Cagnin was born in Treviso, Italy. He became interested in music at an early age and was taught violin and viola at the conservatory in Venice. He went on to study choral music, choral and orchestral conducting and composition in Venice and Milan and continued his studies in Leipzig with Kurt Masur and Fabio Luisi.
In Leipzig, Cagnin had occasion to work with the St. Thomas Boys¡¯ Chorus as assistant to their artistic director, Georg Thomas Biller; he conducted the choir in several of their weekly concerts at St. Thomas¡¯s Church. In 2007, he conducted the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig in his first opera production, La Trag¨¦die de Carmen by M. Constant and Georges Bizet.
In 2008, Cagnin took over as conductor of Brucknerchor, one of the Vienna Boys¡¯ Choir¡¯s touring ensembles. He is thrilled to work with the young choristers. Manolo Cagnin¡¯s declared aim is to instil a love of music in the boys. ¡°Music, and particularly singing, is a gift; it is a direct expression of emotions, a language that everyone understands. As performers, we have a duty to master that language and communicate with our audience. If we manage that, we will have achieved much.¡±
His first tour with the choir takes him to China and Vietnam
