Nederlands Dans Theater has been one of the leading dance companies world-wide since it began in 1959. Although all its dancers have been classically trained, it is modern dance rather than ballet that Nederlands Dans Theater engages in, at the highest international level.

Anders Hellstrom is the artistic director of Nederlands Dans Theater. He compiles programmes combining the gems of the company's own repertoire – works by in-house choreographers Jiri Kylian and Lightfoot Leon – with new creations by established choreographers and raging talents. Together they conjure up a world of beauty and animation in the Lucent Danstheater in The Hague. Given the international character and the universal language of dance, Nederlands Dans Theater is a popular guest on all the big stages. The company travels the world, from The Hague to New York and from Tokyo to Rio de Janeiro.

Nederlands Dans Theater comprises two ensembles representing two generations of dancers: from budding talent starting their career in Nederlands Dans Theater II to full bloom in Nederlands Dans Theater I:

Nederlands Dans Theater I

The 'big' ensemble consists of 30 dancers varying in age from 23 to 42. All of them have excellent solo qualities. These fabulous dancers and the widely varied repertoire they put on the stage attract full houses all over the world.

Nederlands Dans Theater II

The ensemble for young raging talents was founded in 1978 and presently consists of sixteen dancers up to 23 years of age. Their technique is astounding; their boundless energy sets the stage alight. Started originally as an internal training class, the ensemble has grown into world class. Internationally, Nederlands Dans Theater II is famous for being one of the most revolutionary ensembles in the world of modern dance.
