A brief introduction about Chuanyun Li
Chuan-Yun Li, the Chinese-born virtuoso, is acclaimed by Maestro Dorothy DeLay and Maestro Ruggiero Ricci as a "great violinist" and by Strad Magazine as "the best of all".
Hailed by The Daily Camera (July, 2003) as ¡°a massive talent with astonishing dynamic and expressive range¡,¡± Chuanyun Li began his violin lessons at the age of three with his parents. A prize winner in the Beijing Youth and Junior Violin Competition at 5 and an active member of the Yip's Children Art Centre since settling in Hong Kong in 1986, he has studied with Professor Yaoji Lin from Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. He won the First Prize in the Fifth Wieniawski International Youth Violin Competition at 11 by the unanimous vote of twenty judges, becoming the youngest prizewinner under 16.
In 1996, he was awarded a full scholarship to the Pre-College Division of the Juilliard School of Music where he studied with Dorothy DeLay, Itzhak Perlman and Hyo Kang. He participated in the Aspen Music Festival from 1995 to 2001 and won the Nakamichi Violin Concerto Competition held in Aspen in 1996. He continued his studies with Dorothy DeLay and Kurt Sassmannshaus at the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in 1999 and 2000. With the support of the Clarisse B Kampel Foundation, Li furthers his studies with Joey Corpus in New York City.
Among the many ancient violins Li has performed on is a G.B. Guadagnini, of Turin, Italy, c 1784 on loan from the Stradivari Society. During this tour, Li performs on a $5,000.000 Willemotte made in 1734 on a temporary loan from scientist, collector and violinist Mark Ptashne.
Li has collaborated with such orchestras as the Rotterdam Philharmonic with Valery Gergiev, the Detroit Symphony under Neemi Jarvi, China National Symphony with Xincao Li, Colorado Festival Orchestra with Michael Christie, Singapore Symphony with Lan Shui and Okko Kamu and the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra with Yazaki Hikotaro. In 2001, Li toured to France with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta under the baton of Tsung Yeh. In September 2003, at 5 days notice, Li replaced Maxim Vengerov and performed Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole and Ravel's Tzigane with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra under Rumon Gamba. He appeared in the Tri-Institutional Noon Recital with Robert Koenig at the Rockefeller University in New York in September, 2004.
